Os portugueses já conhecem a palavra do ano de 2024: “liberdade”, escolhida com 22% dos votos em eleição promovida pela Porto Editora, entre os dias 2 e 30 de dezembro do ano passado, pela internet. Em segundo lugar ficou “conflitos”, com 21,3%, e em terceiro “imigração”, com 21,2% dos votos, de acordo com a editora.
Ao todo, dez palavras estavam na disputa: “auricular”, “fogos”, “inclusão”, “inem”, “jovem”, “polícia” e “transportes”, além das três primeiras colocadas. Nas edições anteriores, as palavras eleitas foram:

Palavra do Ano é uma iniciativa que acontece há 16 anos e, de acordo com a Porto Editora, tem o objetivo de “sublinhar a riqueza lexical e o dinamismo criativo da língua portuguesa, patrimônio vivo e precioso de todos os que nela se expressam, acentuando, assim, a importância das palavras e dos seus significados na produção individual e social dos sentidos com que vamos interpretando e construindo a própria vida”.
As palavras que são levadas à votação, todos os anos, vêm dos critérios de trabalho de observação e acompanhamento da realidade da língua portuguesa, da análise de frequência e distribuição de uso das palavras e do relevo que elas alcançam, tanto nos meios de comunicação e redes sociais como nas consultas on-line dos dicionários da Porto Editora, por meio da Infopédia e das sugestões dos portugueses pelo site www.palavradoano.pt.
